The Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) supports the environmental quality, economic development, and public safety of Illinois by providing accurate, objective earth science research and information.
ISGS staff conduct basic and applied research in geology, compile geologic maps, gather and manage Illinois’ geological data, and provide information about the state’s geology and mineral resources to industry, municipalities and government agencies, and the public.
As part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, ISGS also collaborates with the Illinois Natural History Survey, Illinois State Archaeological Survey, Illinois State Water Survey, and Illinois Sustainable Technology Center.
ISGS staff also conduct joint research projects, supervise graduate studies, and teach courses through joint appointments with U of I academic departments.
ISGS is led by Richard C. Berg, who also serves as Illinois State Geologist.
