Prairie Research Institute Illinois State Geological Survey

Publications, Maps & Data

ISGS publications, maps, and research data are available online. These utilities allow you to search, browse, and download ISGS publications, maps, and geospatial data.

Many publications and maps that were once distributed through the online shop are now available through the links below. If you can’t find the resource you need, please email ISGS directly.

The ISGS Resources site is a repository for publications, maps, data, and interactive resources. We also maintain several web applications, including ILMINES, ILOIL, and ILWATER, where you can explore Illinois’ underground mining, water, oil, and many other resources.

Publications

Most ISGS publications are available online and indexed by category, author, and date, including annual reports, bulletins, circulars, educational materials (including the Field Trip Guidebooks and the Geobits series), on our ISGS Resources site.

Maps

Browse and search geologic and topographic maps related to Illinois.

ISGS Maps

A catalog of hundreds of geologic maps is available on the Maps page of our Resources site. You can search them by keyword, and you can narrow results using advanced filters such as quadrangle, county, series, theme, and scale.

The collection includes numerous Illinois geologic maps, including aquifer sensitivity maps, aerial photography, orthophotography, and a plethora of other map publications that document our state’s geology and natural resources.

USGS Topographic Maps

Explore USGS topographic maps through topoView. This interactive tool provides access to both current and historical topographic maps that users can search by location or quadrangle name to find maps from the late nineteenth century through the present.

Preview maps online or download (available in several formats) for use in mapping software and other applications.

Data

Geospatial datasets from ISGS research are available through the Illinois Geospatial Data Clearinghouse. The clearinghouse provides downloadable Illinois geospatial data, GIS datasets, and remote sensing resources. Available data are grouped into climate, coastal, elevation, geology, hydrology, imagery, infrastructure, land cover, and reference categories.

Glossary

We also have a glossary of common geological terms available on the Resources site, separated by letter.
