Stratigraphic relationships

It occurs 15-25 feet above the Bidwell Coal.

Extent and thickness

The New Burnside Coal is well developed in scattered localities in southern Illinois and is as much as 5 feet thick where mined; however, in most of the area it is generally thinner.
